Recording at the American Academy of Religion
Are we able to imagine another possible world?
I am writing from snowy Denver, Colorado where I’m attending the American Academy of Religion. I am here with my podcast cohost and we are recording with scholars of religion for our podcast. I am excited about the conversations that we will have and also excited to get this engaged scholarship out into the world! Are you listening to the Activist Theology Podcast? You can find it wherever you find your podcasts!
I’ve been attending AAR since 1999 when I was still in college. I knew when I attended my first AAR here in Denver, CO that I wanted to be a part of this community! I have found some of the most generous people here and there are those who are not so generous. This space and place is one of the places where we can ask the hard questions of how we imagine another possible world! What does it mean to become a collective of bodies and communities? Are we able to steward ethical futures rooted in liberation?
I’ll be giving a paper for the Society of Biblical Literature, which meets concurrently with the American Academy of Religion. My paper is on the Bible and Activism, and I am sharing how the Bible has been weaponized against the underside of history and what we can do as scholars to help communities become more literate in biblical hermeneutics and the history that composes the Bible. That panel should be a good one!
In December, I’ll be starting to draft some ideas on my next book-length project around freedom and belonging! I have many ideas floating around in my mind, but I’m not sure how to compile them in a way that makes sense just yet; so, I’ll be using my substack to begin to float some ideas about freedom and belonging! I hope you’ll join me for that month of inquiry!
