Dear Substack Community: I’m trying something out. A Monday Meditation, because I need it. I need to start my weeks with a meditation, with a guiding light, so here is my meditation for this Monday. I hope you enjoy it. The meditations won’t always be religious or spiritual, but I hope they will ground us in our moment and invite us to put our thinking into action!
Epiphany: A Call to Liberation and Action
Today, as we celebrate Epiphany—the manifestation of Christ to the world—we are reminded of the Magi who journeyed from distant lands, guided by a divine light, to honor the newborn Jesus. Their pilgrimage symbolizes a revelation that transcends boundaries, inviting all of humanity into the transformative embrace of God’s love.
In our current political climate, marked by escalating conflicts, economic disparities, and the erosion of human rights, the message of Epiphany resonates with profound urgency. The light that led the Magi illuminates the path toward justice, compelling us to confront systems of oppression and to stand in solidarity with the marginalized.
Liberation theology teaches us that faith is inherently political, calling us to engage in the struggle for freedom and dignity for all people. As followers of Christ, we are summoned to embody this liberating light, challenging policies that perpetuate inequality and advocating for those whose voices are silenced.
The Magi’s defiance of King Herod’s orders serves as a testament to the power of civil disobedience in the face of tyranny. Their choice to “return by another route” (Matthew 2:12) exemplifies the moral imperative to resist unjust authority and to seek alternative pathways that honor the sanctity of life.
In this season of Epiphany, let us commit ourselves to actions that reflect the inclusive and liberating love of Christ. May we:
• Advocate for policies that uphold the rights and dignity of all individuals, particularly the oppressed and marginalized.
• Engage in acts of solidarity with communities affected by injustice, offering support and amplifying their voices.
• Challenge narratives that perpetuate division and discrimination, fostering instead a culture of empathy and understanding.
As we journey together, guided by the same divine light that led the Magi, let us become bearers of hope and agents of liberation in our world today.
Let us be the change we long to see in the world!
Paz, —Roberto Che Espinoza.
