Dear Substack community: Preparing to preach each Sunday is humbling. I read scripture and watch the news; I read the newspapers and other things, and I am left with this question: is the Light of the world shining more brightly, now? Each year we stumble onto Epiphany, and today, while there are wars raging on, I ask the question, again: Is the Light shining more brightly?
How might we achieve peace in our lifetime? With populist right wing autocrats emerging all over the world in different places, there has to be some connection. This isn’t about conservative versus liberal. This is about the struggle to live well. How do we do that, now? How can we do that, now? We need to recover intimacy in our daily life and lovingkindness. How might we do that? We need pace on earth, now more than ever, and we need to address the climate catastrophe. How might we do this?
We have to join together. As my dear friend told me last night via text, “we are in a cosmic moment.” Yes, we are! How can we steward this cosmic moment to fruition and bring heaven to earth? That is our job as we prepare to go into this year of 2024.
May the Spirit who stills and hushes be with us. And, may the Spirit who excites, excite us for another possible world!
Onward, —Dr. Roberto Che Espinoza
