Dear Substack Community: I don’t typically send emails every day, but it’s the 12 Days of Christmas where I hope to be spreading Christmas peace. Today I ask a question in the Friday Formation email: Is Democracy a Worthy Idea that we should pursue?
With the rise of autocracy here and abroad (look at Argentina and other countries who have elected right-wing populist candidates), we must be vigilant about what kind of political environment we want to steward. This is an ethical question.
Democracy has always been an idea and an ideal, but we’ve never really achieved democracy. So, how might we lean more into this idea and actually generate a democratic reality?
It’s going to take dreamers and healers and those of sound mind to steward a democratic reality. What is your part in this work? For me, I’m going to use the local church as a place to organize peace, love, hope, and joy. I hope you’ll join me either in person or online.
May we steward the Gospel, which is peace and love fiercely in all we do!
