🌱 Friday Care Package
Week 18 of 52 —
Threshold
A Care Practice for Living Into Possibility
✨ The Word We Are Tending
Threshold
Dear Becoming Ones—
Each Friday, I write on the word possibility for my Friday Care Package. I started writing on care last year, and spent 52 weeks writing on different aspects of care. You can find those essays and thoughts, sometimes unfinished and undone, in the archive.
I will return to care, as I work on writing about ethical masculinities, with Michael McRay.
Today, I write on possibility.
This year, I write on possibility, because I am stubborn and people call me a hope stalker!
Today’s word that we are tending is threshold.
Threshold is the trembling moment where we realize the old world no longer fits—
but the new world has not fully arrived.
I am a crossing.
I have been a crossing for a long time now.
Between worlds.
Between names.
Between belonging and exile.
Between the self I inherited and the self still emerging.
As James Baldwin reminds us:
“Nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
Thresholds ask us to face what is ending
without fully knowing what is beginning.
That is terrifying.
And holy.
🌌 Nepantla
When Gloria Anzaldúa wrote about nepantla, she was naming this in-between space—the crossing place where identities loosen, where certainty dissolves, where something new struggles to come into form.
I live in nepantla.
In the midst of a hyper-colonized site of empire.
In the tension between containment and freedom.
The fugitive cannot be fully captured, because the fugitive chooses freedom even while contained.
That, too, is threshold wisdom.
🌿 Crossing Over
We need more thresholds.
More spaces where people can pause long enough to feel what no longer fits.
More crossings that empower us toward possibility.
Not certainty.
Not perfection.
Just enough courage to cross.
🔁 The Refrain
Another world is not demanded of us— it is invited through attention, care, and courage.
🌿 Fugitive Somatic Practice
Standing at the Threshold
Pause.
Feel your feet touching the ground.
Ask quietly:
“What no longer fits?”
Then ask:
“What am I being invited toward?”
Do not rush the answer.
Thresholds cannot be forced.
🕯 Closing
You do not need to have arrived.
You only need the courage
to remain in the crossing.
Paz,
