Potentiality
A Care Practice for Living Into Possibility
✨ The Word We Are Tending
Potentiality
Dear Becoming Ones—
I sit down again to write this Friday Care Package.
I started this practice because I needed care.
Last year, I wrote on care every Friday.
This year, I am writing on possibility—tracing its many names, its many openings.
Today’s word is Potentiality.
Not just potential—
not what we should become.
But the deeper, quieter sense of what could come into being
even if it has not yet taken recognizable form.
Potentiality lives in the not-yet.
The unformed.
The still-becoming.
As Gilles Deleuze reminds us, the virtual is not unreal—it is emergent. It is what is already moving beneath the surface, asking for conditions to appear.
🌊 The Not-Yet
In an age of collapse—
when many of us are restructuring our lives paycheck to paycheck—
it is easy to miss what is emerging.
Despair is loud.
Collapse is visible.
But potentiality is quiet.
It does not announce itself.
It waits to be noticed.
And so the work becomes this:
To make hope irresistible
instead of despair convincing.
That is the work of a radical.
🌿 Where Potentiality Lives
I see potentiality in small, often overlooked places:
in mutual aid
in economies of care
in beauty and art
in walking through the woods
in watching the countryside unfold from a train window
There is a kind of delight—what Ross Gay might call a discipline of noticing—that helps us stay with what is still alive.
Even now.
Especially now.
🔥 Witnessing the Rupture
And still—I must tell the truth.
I write from exile.
From a place I call Whiteville.
A place where supremacy culture and racialized capitalism shape the water we swim in. A place where institutions quietly dispose of people—students, staff, faculty—under the language of “best interest.”
I am witnessing collapse in real time.
The normalization of harm.
The quiet removal of bodies.
The steady erosion of community.
This is not abstract.
It is happening.
And I am not outside of it.
I have been shaped by these systems.
Compromised by them.
And so potentiality, for me, begins here:
Do not betray yourself.
🧭 Turning Toward
We are living through events that harm the least of these.
And still—
we are invited to orient toward potentiality.
To listen carefully.
To ask:
How do we make a way out of no way?
How do we attend to the sounds that are already within us?
How do we steward what is emerging without forcing it into form too quickly?
Potentiality asks us to match our becoming
to the intensity of what is trying to emerge.
🔁 The Refrain
Another world is not demanded of us—
it is invited through attention, care, and courage.
🌿 Fugitive Somatic Practice
Sensing the Not-Yet
3–5 minutes
Sit or stand without adjusting your environment.
Let your breath arrive as it is.
Ask quietly:
“What is emerging in me that I cannot yet name?”
Do not force language onto it.
Let it remain unformed.
Place a hand on your body and say inwardly:
“I will not rush what is becoming.”
This is fugitive work.
It protects what is not yet ready for the world.
🕯 Closing Blessing
May you trust what has not yet taken shape.
May you notice the quiet movements beneath despair.
May you refuse betrayal of self.
And may potentiality—tended with care—
become the ground from which another world emerges.
Paz,
