A Care Practice for Living Into Possibility
✨ The Word We Are Tending
Opening
Dear Becoming Ones—
We’ve arrived at another Friday in this year-long practice of tracing possibility.
Today’s synonym: Opening
Not just a gap,
but a space made breathable —
where something new is allowed to begin
without already being defined.
🌬️ Breathability
It is rare that we truly get to breathe.
Openings are rare, and when they appear, we often don’t know how to step into them. I have felt this repeatedly while bringing emergent scholarship into practical life — it can feel unintelligible, even to those who care. Not because people are unwilling, but because we lack shared practices for breathability.
We don’t yet know how to hold the air together.
So we hesitate.
We refuse openings that are given to us.
Why?
Perhaps we are afraid of the unknowing.
Afraid of the cracks.
Afraid of the ineffable.
And yet — openings are where justice quietly begins.
In the negative spaces.
In the wound.
In the pause before certainty returns.
🌀 The Turning
As I continue this ethnographic journey, I remember it began with an opening — the simple act of turning toward one another.
That turning still holds me.
I want to nurture another possible world through openings, yet fear shapes so much of our collective behavior. The world teaches foreclosure: predictability, control, conclusion.
But possibility lives elsewhere.
Another world becomes material through openings — not plans alone, not declarations, but moments where relation interrupts certainty.
👁️ Noticing
Are we attuned enough to notice openings?
Or do we sabotage them before they can breathe?
Often, we don’t recognize what we’ve done until the opening has closed. That is part of the grief of this moment: openings are visible, yet few step into them. We sense change but retreat into familiarity.
Still — the invitation remains.
To pay attention
to what is emerging
and to what exceeds our noticing.
🔁 The Refrain
Another world is not demanded of us—
it is invited through attention, care, and courage.
🌿 Fugitive Somatic Practice
Entering the Opening
3–5 minutes
Pause wherever you are. Do not prepare the space.
Take one slow inhale and notice where breath stops naturally.
Ask gently:
“Where is there a little more room than I expected?”
Do not expand it. Simply acknowledge it.
Whisper inwardly:
“I can step here without knowing everything.”
Openings do not require mastery — only presence.
🕯️ Closing
So today, let us lean toward openings.
Small ones.
Unclear ones.
The ones we almost miss.
Can we stay long enough for possibility to breathe?
